SEATTLE — With the holiday season comes the threat of package thefts, and Seattle police are warning about a series of recent mail truck break-ins.
Seattle police said a United States Postal Service carrier told officers she was delivering mail on foot on Tuesday when someone broke into her locked mail truck. It happened in broad daylight around 12:30 p.m. at 42nd Avenue SW and SW Graham Street in West Seattle.
A witness told the USPS carrier he saw a woman remove two trays of mail from the truck, and then drove away in a white SUV.
The carrier told police this has happened multiple times over the last few days. She suspects whoever’s responsible has a key to the mail trucks.
The suspect was not found in the area and police did not release a physical description. It’s unclear if this one person could be tied to the other thefts reported by the mail carrier.
To help prevent similar crimes, the USPS suggests signing up for informed delivery so customers can track their mail; pick up mail from the shipping facility, or arrange to have packages shipped to another location where someone can receive it or sign for it.
The Seattle Police Department is asking anyone with information about the crime, or any other mail theft, to call the SPD at 206-625-5011 or the US Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455.
