Volvo Trucks North America will begin including integrated side curtain airbags as standard equipment on all new VNL and VNR models. The company claims it marks the first time a heavy-duty truck manufacturer has offered the safety feature across its lineup.
The airbags are designed to deploy in a rollover, providing added protection for both drivers and passengers. Rollovers are among the deadliest crash types in trucking, accounting for about half of all occupant fatalities, Volvo said in a news release.
“Our vision Toward Zero Accidents means that no Volvo truck should be involved in an accident,” said Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “By making side curtain airbags standard, we are taking another important step toward protecting both drivers and passengers in some of the most dangerous crash scenarios.”
Volvo first introduced a driver front airbag in 1996 with the launch of the VN model and has since made it standard equipment. Other safety advances from the company include the use of high-strength steel cabs, electronic stability control, and an automatic emergency call system that contacts 911 after an airbag deploys.
