Trucking organizations and others are prasing the U.S. Senate’s conformation of Sean Duffy as secretary of transportation.
President Donald Trump’s nominee was confirmed by a vote of 77 to 22.
Duffy spent eight years representing a congressional district in Wisconsin, and most recently served as a co-host of “The Bottom Line” on Fox Business.
Trucking organizations praised Duffy’s confirmation.
Jim Ward, president of the Truckload Carriers Association said:
“The Truckload Carriers Association congratulates former Congressman Sean Duffy on his appointment as the new Secretary of Transportation. TCA looks forward to collaborating with Secretary Duffy and the Department of Transportation to promote policies that enhance the safety and efficiency of our nation’s highways.
“TCA remains dedicated to fostering meaningful discussions on key issues, including implementing advanced safety technologies like automatic emergency braking systems, hair testing as an approved method for drug screening in the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, and addressing the critical need for expanded truck parking facilities. These initiatives are vital for ensuring highway safety and supporting the professional growth of the trucking workforce, reflecting our deep appreciation for their essential contributions.
“We are excited to work alongside Secretary Duffy and his team to address these and other priorities that impact the truckload industry and the broader transportation sector. Together, we aim to strengthen the industry’s role as the backbone of America’s economy.”
Todd Spencer, President of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association said:
“OOIDA and the 150,000 small business truckers we represent congratulate Secretary Sean Duffy on his confirmation to lead the U.S. Department of Transportation. We look forward to continue working with him in advancing the priorities of small business truckers across America, including expanding truck parking, fighting freight fraud, and rolling back burdensome, unnecessary regulations.”
Chris Spear, president and CEO of the American Trucking Associations said:
“On behalf of the trucking industry, it is a pleasure to congratulate Sean Duffy on his confirmation to lead the Department of Transportation as the 20th Secretary of Transportation. Today’s strong, bipartisan vote in favor of his nomination is an endorsement of his qualifications and experience for this position. It also reflects his commitment to unite stakeholders around commonsense policies to make our transportation network safer and more efficient.
“Transportation is an issue that affects every American, and it is the key to a thriving economy, social and economic mobility, and job creation. Throughout his congressional service, Secretary Duffy was a steadfast supporter of hardworking truckers and the work that they do to deliver the nation’s freight. We look forward to building on our partnership with Secretary Duffy in the years ahead to modernize our infrastructure and increase the resiliency of our supply chain.”
NATSO, which represents truck stops and travel centers, issued the following statement:
“NATSO congratulates Mr. Sean Duffy on his confirmation as Secretary of Transportation and looks forward to working with him on a broad spectrum of issues, including the need for long-term, sustainable highway funding and policies that promote prosperity for businesses that thrive because of the Interstate Highway System.
“As Secretary Duffy considers proposals for funding infrastructure and the reauthorization of surface transportation law, we encourage him to focus on solutions that solve our infrastructure investment challenges without harming the interstate-exit based businesses that help to support the nation’s economy and their local communities by providing jobs and crucial tax revenues. Maintaining existing policies that prohibit commercialization of Interstate rest areas and the longstanding ban on tolling existing Interstate Highways are key to that effort.
“Truck stops, travel centers and off-highway fuel retailers have long supported market-based policies that preserve consumer choice. A competitive environment ensures that our customers have the freedom to select their desired amenities, services and refueling options, while also helping to keep prices low.
“Should the Administration evaluate policies influencing fuel economy, emissions standards, electric vehicles and their requisite refueling infrastructure, we encourage Secretary Duffy to support policies that promote these fundamental market dynamics while moving away from mandates, insteadencouraging consumer choice and competition in the refueling market.”
Alliance for Chemical Distribution (ACD) President and CEO Eric R. Byer released the following statement:
“ACD applauds the U.S. Senate for swiftly confirming Sean Duffy to serve as Secretary of Transportation. The chemical distribution industry relies on an efficient and safe freight transportation system to support our domestic and international supply chains and ensure the delivery of chemical products that are crucial to American’s everyday lives. We look forward to working with Mr. Duffy as he assumes this new role and we are confident that he will lead the DOT forward in its mission of improving America’s transportation systems.”
