WEST HAVEN — A tractor-trailer driver was cited after a crash involving his vehicle and another truck caused delays Friday morning on the southbound side of Interstate 95.
The driver, a 29-year-old Newark, Del., man, was issued an infraction for failure to maintain lane, state police said in a crash information summary. Both the 29-year-old and the other driver involved in the crash, identified as a 69-year-old Bridgeport man, suffered minor injuries, state police said.
Troop G, of Bridgeport, responded to I-95 southbound around 5:45 a.m. Friday, according to state police. While traveling in the center lane of three south of Exit 42 in West Haven, state police said, the 29-year-old’s tractor-trailer shifted right, striking the rear of a tractor-trailer traveling in the right lane and causing that truck to jackknife.
Both tractor-trailers came to a stop in the right lane and had to be towed from the scene, according to state police. Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed two tractor trailers pulled over on the highway near Exit 42 Friday morning. Diesel fuel leaking from ruptured tanks spilled out onto the roadway, along with “consumable good” carried by the 69-year-old’s tractor-trailer, state police said.
The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was advised of the crash, according to state police. Other responding agencies included the state Department of Transportation, the state Department of Consumer Protection, the West Shore Fire Department and the West Haven Fire Department, state police said.
The 69-year-old Bridgeport man, who suffered a “possible injury,” and the 29-year-old Delaware man, who suffered a “suspected minor injury,” were transported by ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital and Yale New Haven’s St. Raphael campus, respectively, according to state police. Investigators found the Delaware man at fault for the crash, state police said.
Due to the crash, I-95 southbound was partially closed for several hours. State police earlier said the right lane, center lane and Exit 42 on-ramp were closed. Drivers were at one point backed up nearly 3 miles to Exit 44 Friday morning.
By late Friday morning, the scene had been cleared and traffic lanes had reopened, the cameras showed.
