WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – One of Wilmington’s busiest roads was shut down on Friday due to a car side-swiping a semi-truck, leading it to overturn.
The crash happened at around 9 a.m. Friday morning on Carolina Beach Rd. between Hart St. and Medical Center Dr.
The truck driver was transporting salt from the city port when a driver hit the truck. Police say the truck driver tried to correct, shifting the load of salt, causing the truck to overturn. The crash caused a chain reaction involving 7 other vehicles.
No one was seriously hurt, but the truck driver was taken to a hospital by EMS shortly after the crash and other minor injuries were reported. Along with the crash, a mailbox was damaged and one pedestrian was struck by debris.
The road was shut down for several hours as crews worked to clean up the scene.
The driver that hit the truck, 20-year-old Tyrese McNeil, as been charged with Careless and Reckless Operation and Improper Passing.
“Prior to this incident, the WPD had equipment staged with a strategic plan in place for the corridor between the State Port and exit points of Wilmington including the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. This plan allowed us to keep the flow of traffic moving during this incident,” a Wilmington Police Department announcement states.
