Popular retailer to shutter Texas hub and laying off 300 people
Just last month, JCPenney announced it was set to close seven stores and now there’s more not-so-great news for the popular retailer.
The beloved clothing retailer, which is found at malls nationwide, is shutting down a major fulfillment facility in Haslet, Texas. The location, officially called the JCPenney Alliance Regional Logistics Center, will close in early November.
As a result of the facility closing, approximately 300 people will be out of work, it’s being reported. This comes after the store announced it is planning to close eight locations in 2025. The company has over 650 stores across the country.

The closure is scheduled for November 1, with job cuts unfolding in two waves: August 1-14, followed by November 1-14, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification.
The iconic clothing store was founded in 1902 and at its height had over 2,000 stores and a mail-order catalog that was found in practically every household in the US.
After closing seven stores, just last month, JCPenney now has 649 locations across the US and Puerto Rico.
JCPenney began closing stores in 2010 and in 2020 filed for bankruptcy, emerging from Chapter 11 in the same year under new ownership.
With JCPenney being a staple of American malls, when a store shuts down, it can mean the mall comes next, and as a result, the closure of malls can put fear into the surrounding community and American public as a whole.
According to CNBC, a mall goes beyond the shopping experience, it’s an “economic engine,” a place of employment for hundreds of people and makes a significant contribution to local tax revenue.
