Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) has commenced construction on a cutting-edge cargo facility, signaling a major expansion. Marking a significant expansion aimed at streamlining air freight operations in the region. The new development, led in partnership with Crow Holdings, is set to enhance Wisconsin’s logistics capabilities by offering an efficient alternative to the congestion and higher costs associated with major Illinois airports.
The 337,000-square-foot air cargo facility will occupy a section of the former 440th Airlift Wing, now known as the MKE Regional Business Park. Designed to accommodate up to five Boeing 747-400 freighters simultaneously, the facility will not only provide a significant boost to Milwaukee’s cargo-handling capabilities but also generate over $1.3 million in annual aircraft landing fees and more than $1 million in ground lease rents and fees.
A major economic boost
Airport Director Brian Dranzik called it a “generational investment”, stressing that it will allow manufacturers and suppliers to move cargo faster and at lower costs. “This facility will be a game-changer for Wisconsin’s supply chain,” he added.
For Crow Holdings, this marks the culmination of nearly three years of planning and over $2 million in development efforts. Vice President Jack Rabenn said the project would serve as a key entry point for international trade, boosting logistics for Milwaukee, southeastern Wisconsin, and the greater Midwest.
The expansion is expected to attract new air cargo carriers, lower operating costs for airlines, and spur business growth in surrounding areas. By modernizing infrastructure and providing better accessibility for large freighters, the facility will strengthen Milwaukee’s position in Midwest logistics. In addition to expanding air cargo operations, the project has the potential to support passenger airline growth, as improved airport facilities often make an airport more attractive for new routes and carriers.
Completion set for 2026
With construction underway, the facility is set to open in 2026, adding new capacity for businesses seeking a more efficient air cargo gateway. The public-private partnership ensures that the facility is fully funded without direct taxpayer burden, making it a sustainable long-term investment for the region.
The project reflects Milwaukee airport’s long-term of becoming a key hub for freight movement, offering businesses a competitive, cost-effective alternative for air logistics in the region.
