The corresponding Costume Institute exhibition, inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion, opens May 10 and runs through October 26.
It’s all about highlighting how Black individuals transformed from being styled by others—often as status symbols during slavery—to becoming iconic tastemakers in their own right, carving out a new era of self-expression through clothing.
