Expect difficult weather conditions if your trucking travels take you through southeast Texas today, and across the midsection of the country the next couple of days.
Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas in the early morning hours today as a Category 1 storm and knocked out electrical service to more than 1.7 homes and businesses. Strong winds and heavy rains targeted the greater Houston area, leaving one man dead when a tree fell on his home in a Houston suburb. More than 1,000 flights were cancelled at Houston’s two airports.
The storm’s center hit land around 4 a.m. today about 85 miles southwest of Houston with top sustained winds of 80 mph.
In Louisiana, heavy bands of rain are expected all day today, making flash flooding possible, according to the National Weather Service.
The Weather Service also said it expected Beryl to weaken to a tropical storm today and a tropical depression Tuesday, as it heads in a northeasterly direction and increases in speed tonight and tomorrow. The Weather Service said Beryl’s center is expected to move over eastern Texas today and then through the lower the Mississippi Valley into the Ohio Valley Tuesday and Wednesday.
Beryl became the season’s first Category 5 storm, causing 11 deaths as it crossed the Caribbean.
