
A FedEx Express driver won this year’s Arizona Trucking Association Truck Driving Championship.
Held at Tempe Diablo Stadium, this year’s event brought together more than 170 professional drivers.
David Coffel of FedEx Express earned the title of grand champion. Other special award recipients included:
- Best Skills/Driving Course: David Coffel, FedEx Express
- Best Pre-Trip Inspection: Victor Cruz, FedEx Freight
- David Messmer Rookie of the Year: Harley Hornecker, UPS
Coffel and eight additional class winners will represent Team Arizona at the National Truck Driving Championships in Minneapolis, Aug. 20–23. There, they will compete against over 430 of the nation’s best professional drivers.

Drivers competed in three phases:
- A written exam testing knowledge of industry regulations, safety, health and wellness, first aid, fire safety, and security;
- A pre-trip inspection, requiring drivers to identify safety-related equipment defects; and
- A skills/driving course featuring six challenges designed to simulate real-world driving conditions.
