Beginning Wednesday, May 29, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will close the eastbound span of the Blue Water Bridge (BWB) to complete what the agency called “critical maintenance.”
This project is managed by MDOT and will address required maintenance on the eastbound BWB span connecting Port Huron, Michigan, and Point Edward, Ontario, Canada.
To reduce impacts on traffic, both directions of BWB traffic will be carried on the westbound span, according to MDOT. One outgoing lane will be reserved for eastbound traffic heading into Canada, while one outgoing lane will be reserved for westbound traffic heading into the United States.
While MDOT completes this work, the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) will address additional repairs to the eastbound span, much of which is occurring under the bridge deck.
MDOT and FBCL are working closely to coordinate work and closures, reducing continual impact to commuters. While the westbound BWB span carries both directions of traffic, MDOT customers should expect the following impacts:
- Dedicated lanes for commuter pass holders and buses will not be accommodated
- Wide loads will be restricted to less than 10 feet
