A police officer was struck from behind by a tractor trailer while making the rounds in Virginia on Sunday night.
The accident occurred on August 6th in Augusta County, Virginia on Interstate 81 at 9:48 p.m.
According to WHSV 3, the deputy was heading north on I-81 near mile marker 220 when he entered a work zone. The deputy was just making his way through the work zone and not responding to any particular calls when his vehicle was struck from behind by a tractor trailer.
The force of the impact pushed the patrol vehicle 100 yards down the roadway and into a VDOT work truck with an energy-absorbing bumper. The police cruiser then spun around before coming to a stop.
The tractor trailer driver did not stop and fled the scene of the accident. VDOT workers at the scene were able to help the wrecked deputy, who was unable to radio for help due to extensive damage to his vehicle. The deputy was transported to the hospital where his injuries were treated. The extent of his injuries are unclear. No other injuries have been reported.
“I am thankful that our deputy survived this horrific incident and I am thankful for the quick and professional response by the Virginia Department of Transportation workers, the Virginia State Police, Augusta County Fire Rescue, Riverheads Volunteer Fire Department – Station 25, and the Augusta County Emergency Communications Center,” Sheriff Donald Smith said, “I am also thankful that the deputy was wearing his seatbelt and that he sustained only minor injuries”.
