Briefly: Saia's new terminal in Portland, Maine is eighth one this year -

Saia, Inc. announced recently that Saia LTL Freight has opened its newest terminal in Scarborough, Maine, just south of Portland.

This is the eighth terminal the carrier has opened since January and the first terminal the company has opened in the state.

Beyond its proximity to Boston, Portland is home to Maine’s largest port and population, making it the state’s economic capital. This newest location allows Saia to offer its customers more direct coverage as demand for its shipping services continues to grow in the Northeast and beyond, according to a statement from the company.

“We are very excited to be part of the Portland area,” said Vice President of Operations, East Jared Mull. “I’d like to welcome our newest employees to the Saia family. The success Saia has seen throughout the region has been because of the service our team provides our customers each day.”

Saia also just recently moved into new terminals in Salt Lake City, Utah and Colorado Springs, Colorado.

UPS to hire 60,000 this weekend

UPS recently said it plans to hire at least 60,000 of the 100,000 seasonal employees it needs for the holiday season this weekend. This Friday and Saturday, the company’s annual UPS Brown Friday events will take place across the country. 

Marking six years of UPS Brown Fridays, the hiring blitz begins Nov. 3, with more than 600 in-person and virtual events scheduled nationwide. The hiring weekend is part of the company’s broader effort to hire seasonal workers for its annual holiday shipping rush.

“UPS Brown Friday events are an opportunity for tens of thousands of Americans to land one of the country’s best seasonal jobs,” said Nando Cesarone, Executive Vice President and President, U.S. Operations. “From package handlers to drivers, we have a role that suits your lifestyle and your interests. This Brown Friday, getting hired at UPS is easier than ever. Many applicants will have a job offer in less than 20 minutes. The company is filling full- and part-time seasonal positions, primarily package handlers, driver helpers, and seasonal support drivers. Package car driver positions begin at $23 per hour. Package handler and most driver helper positions begin at $21 per hour.

UPS said in a statement seasonal positions are a great way to get a foot in the door for a permanent role, which can lead to a long-term career. For permanent employees, UPS boasts an 86% promotion from within rate.

Southeastern announces South Houston promotion

Southeastern Freight Lines, a provider of regional less-than-truckload services, recently announced Henry Ruelas has been promoted to service center manager in South Houston, Texas.

Ruelas started his career at the Houston service center as an inbound and outbound freight handler. He has served in various positions during his time with the company, including pickup and delivery driver, pickup and delivery operations manager and, most recently, service center manager in Orange, Texas.

“Henry is an exemplary leader with a proven track record of advancing our culture and serving our customers at a high level,” said Austin Winters, regional vice president of operations for Southeastern Freight Lines. “Over the course of his 23-year career with Southeastern, Henry has demonstrated an ability to not only serve customers but support the personal and professional development of the associates he leads.”
