Kirt McDougall
McDougall was previously named the 2023 Saskatchewan Driver of the Year. He was chosen among seven 2023 provincial drivers of the year to be this year’s national winner.
McDougall began his career with Bison Transport in October of 2011, as a long combination vehicle turnpike driver based out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan . Operating in a truck share capacity, he has achieved 1.15 million consecutive accident-free miles.
The CTA said his contributions extend far beyond his driving record. He is known for helping others, whether it’s supporting fellow Bison drivers, raising funds for the Humboldt Broncos players, or assisting his community in times of need.
An example of his selflessness is his and his wife’s work in assisting individuals with mental health and addiction issues. McDougall not only volunteers his time on the streets but also provides food and essential supplies to those in need.
“With this award, Kirt is among the best of the best drivers in our great industry. He is a true ambassador to trucking,” said CTA President Stephen Laskowski. “On behalf of CTA and I am proud to honor such a passionate, dedicated professional as Canada’s top truck driver.”
McDougall’s recognition as the National Driver of the Year is a testament to his commitment to excellence, both on and off the road, ssaid Susan Ewart, executive director of the Saskatchewan Trucking Association.
“The Saskatchewan Trucking Association is incredibly proud of Kirt McDougall for being honored as the National Driver of the Year. As the 2023 Saskatchewan Professional Driver of the Year, Kirt’s dedication, professionalism, and commitment to excellence have set a benchmark in our industry,” she said. “This national recognition not only highlights his individual achievements but also underscores the high standards upheld by the Saskatchewan trucking community. Congratulations to Kirt and Bison Transport for this well-deserved honor.”
Volvo Trucks Canada sponsors both national and provincial Driver of the Year awards in recognition of the importance of safety in the trucking industry.
Each year, a panel of judges made up of representatives from each provincial trucking association selects a national winner from among recipients of the Driver of the Year award in each province. The national winner is selected for excellence among peers who have maintained a collision-free driving record and otherwise demonstrated exemplary professionalism both on and off the road.
