Here are a couple of videos about young people coming into the industry in an area where trucking operations are desperate, that is diesel mechanics, here we are giving young people an example to follow into the workshop.
In the first video Renee Gibson who works for Volvo Commercial Vehicles talks articulately about what inspires her and what her passions are. It does help to come from a farming background where there is an opportunity to work in a workshop environment at a young age.
These are the kind of inspirational stories the trucking industry needs to get out there and publicise more regularly and more forcefully. At the current rate, we are going to run out of qualified technicians working on our trucks. The people working in workshops is getting older and there are many other attractive options for young people at the age of 18. We need to work on transforming, working in a diesel workshop into an attractive option for young people, or older people looking for change in their working life.
In the second video, Ryan has other interests outside of work and his employer encourages and helps him to take part in his other interests outside of being a diesel mechanic.
As Ryan says,”It’s been really great that I’ve been able to use a childhood hobby and turn it into a career.”
I recently visited a large truck workshop which currently has 10 apprentices working in the shop. However, the operator still has to source certain technicians from overseas because it is impossible for them to hire any here in Australia.
As artificial intelligence infiltrates further into our society and a lot of the more mundane jobs disappear perhaps this is our opportunity to attract people into the trucking industry as technicians, give them a challenge in a line of work, in which artificial intelligence will struggle to take over.
