It’s the Japan Mobility Show 2023 this week and that means a wide array of new trucks are being launched this week including new diesel, electric and fuel cell from Hino and Fuso. Interestingly for Australian truck buyers they are all introducing new heavy duty models, something which does not happen very often in the Japanese market.
Next Generation Shogun
Fuso is introducing the new Super Great (known here as the Shogun), which has been fully remodelled six years after its last major redesign in 2017.The latest model is equipped with the 6R30 12.8L engine, and the cab has been redesigned to improve aerodynamics.
The new model also features an upgraded cabin interior design with the new look designated as Fuso Black Belt, a style which which carry through the whole model lineup, from Canter to Shogun. The new truck is equipped with Active Brake Assist 6 and Active Side Guard Assist 2.0.
“The heavy-duty Shogun range is more popular than ever in Australia thanks to its safety, power and durability,” said Alex Müller, Fuso Truck and Bus Australia Pacific Vice President. “We are excited to see the next-generation Super Great (called Shogun in Australia and New Zealand) revealed in Tokyo, which demonstrates that we are going further to bring state of art technology to our hard-working customers.
“It is too early to discuss the details of the Australian heavy-duty Shogun line-up, including timing. These details will be finalised after the comprehensive local testing and evaluation making sure the specifications and applications perfectly match the unique requirements of the Australian market.”
Hino Heading Down the Alt-Power Route
The stand in Tokyo at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 sees Hino heading down the alt-power route, with the light-duty Dutro Z-EV (Battery Electric Vehicle) and a prototype version of the heavy-duty Profia Z-FCV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle), these models are known as 300 Series and 700 Series respectively in Australia.
“The Dutro Z-EV has been in production in Japan for over a year, and customer demand in Japan has been stronger than expected,” said Daniel Petrovski, Department Manager, Product Strategy for Hino Australia. “The design is particularly clever, with a compact 50kW electric motor mounted under the cab driving the front wheels.
“A low-profile lithium-ion battery is located under the vehicle and sits between and along the sides of the chassis rails, allowing for an ultra-low floor and cargo area. The ultra-low floor makes it easier for operators to move around the vehicle to load and unload cargo, and importantly, to get in and out of the vehicle.”
In addition to the walk-through van, Hino also offers a traditional light truck style cab chassis version with an estimated cruising range of 150km and a payload of approximately 1,000kg.
Also featured on the stand is a prototype Hino heavy-duty Profia Z-FCV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) which has been developed collaboratively between Hino and its parent company Toyota.
“The Hino Profia Z-FCV incorporates a Toyota Fuel Cell system, with an AC synchronous motor, large-capacity high-pressure hydrogen tanks and a lithium ion battery to deliver a driving range in excess of 600 kilometres, which is well suited to the highway transportation operation these vehicles are used for in Japan,” said Daniel.
