This year sees a continuation of the booming truck sales set off by the pandemic, and the ongoing battle for number one in heavy duty truck sales between Volvo and Kenworth.
After a year when the difference between the two, in terms of heavy duty truck sales figures, has been in single digits, the end of the third quarter has seen the momentum shift towards Kenworth, with the Bayswater truck maker beating its fierce rival in September by 42 heavy duty trucks to regain number one status and sit again at the top of the pile.
In the year to date, Kenworth sit at 20.3 per cent market share with Volvo at 20.1 per cent, a difference of just 24 trucks, in a year when 12,652 trucks have already been sold in this segment. The September figures from the Truck Industry Council suggest the total for 2023 is almost certain to pass the record achieved last year.
The whole truck market in 2023 looks like it is going to break records as well. Isuzu continue to dominate the results, selling over 1,000 trucks in September and breaking through the 10,000 trucks barrier for the year. Isuzu’s market share remains high at 29.2 per cent of the whole truck market for the year so far.
That overall market strength comes from the lighter market segments, where Isuzu are approaching the 50 per cent market share mark. The Japanese brand also represents 45.8 per cent of the light duty truck market.
These high sales figures, in trucks, but also in trailers, do indicate an underlying strength in the economy of Australia. Trucking operators buy trucks when the demand for their services are growing, and the level of increase in truck sales tells us there is strong demand throughout the economy.
