New research from hiring platform Indeed shows that truck driver jobs have seen the biggest growth in demand so far this year.
Jobs for truck drivers saw an 83% rise in demand in the first half of the year.
Indeed said the truck driver shortage in Ireland and the EU has recently been in focus due to delays of up to 10 weeks for drivers wishing to take their HGV driving exam.
This coupled with a growing demand for online orders and international shipping means there is an estimated 3,000-4,000 shortfall of new drivers required to meet demand.
Its research also shows that some hospitality jobs also have seen a big rise in demand, with the majority of the top 20 titles belonging to the industry.
Line Cooks have seen an 66% increase in demand, while food and beverage assistants (60%), commis (52%), chefs (47%) and bartenders (46%) also saw large increases in job postings in the first half of the year.
Deli associates also saw a 24% rise in demand, perhaps reflecting an increase in demand from workers buying lunch out as more companies call for staff to return to offices.
Indeed said that although they have seen a dip from Covid highs, job postings overall on Indeed Ireland are currently 20% higher than pre-pandemic levels.
But job posting levels in Dublin continue to underperform and are now 11% below their pre-pandemic level, partly due to the city’s greater exposure to slowdowns in professional categories.
Job postings remain above pre-pandemic levels in all other counties across Ireland, Indeed added.
Jack Kennedy, Senior Economist at Indeed, said that with shortages all across Europe, it is no surprise that truck drivers top this list.
“HGV test backlogs coupled with an ever growing demand for online shopping and international shipping mean that shortages may persist for some time. The good news for those already working in this area is that they may be able to command better pay and benefits as demand soars,” Jack Kennedy said.
He also said that unsurprisingly, the hospitality industry has also seen a large increase in demand for some jobs, particularly for the summer season.
