PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — About a dozen people looted $30,000 worth of crabs from a long-haul truck in Northeast Philadelphia Friday, injuring the driver in the process.
Authorities say the driver parked his truck in a lot near the former Franklin Mills Mall along Byberry Road and woke up around 5 a.m. to a burglar alarm going off inside his truck.
That’s when he saw about a dozen people stealing nearly 100 boxes of Grandpa Harvey’s snow crabs.
“Regrettably, the driver intervened and was assaulted by two of the males. He wasn’t seriously injured but he was banged up a bit,” said Captain Jack Ryan of the city’s Northeast Detective Division.
Police say the cargo thefts are organized.
“It is definitely a new trend that has taken off in the last couple of years,” Ryan said.
This year, there have been 56 cargo thefts across the city.
In 2023, around $200,000 worth of dimes were stolen from a truck parked in the same lot after the driver stopped at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia.
Police say four vehicles were involved in Friday’s scheme: a black BMW, white Chevy Malibu, gray or gold Subaru, and a Ford.
Police ask if you see anyone selling frozen snow crabs on the street or corner market to contact 911 or call 215-686-8477.
