(WWJ) – A semi-truck driver and a tow truck driver have each been ticketed after a crash on I-94 caused a freeway closure near Detroit Metro Airport Monday afternoon.
Michigan State Police troopers were called to westbound I-94 near Haggerty Road just after 4 p.m. for a four-car crash involving a semi.
MSP officials say the semi driver rear-ended two vehicles on I-94 then lost control and drove down the right ditch to the northbound I-94 service drive.
The truck went through a fence and ultimately hit an illegally parked tow truck on the shoulder of the service drive, according to MSP.
While there were no major injuries to anyone involved in the crash, officials said the semi driver and tow truck driver were both cited.
Following too closely appeared to be the cause of the crash.
“We know that certain risky driving behaviors lead to most of the crashes in Metro Detroit.” said MSP First Lt Mike Shaw. “Following too closely is one of the behaviors. It is important to leave enough room to stop your vehicle safely.”
The freeway was closed for more than an hour but has since reopened. The northbound I-94 Service Drive west of Haggerty, meanwhile, will be closed for “extensive clean up due to the crash,” MSP officials said.
