HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – A delivery truck driver was drunk when his vehicle slammed into a utility pole in Hackettstown, New Jersey Tuesday, according to town police.
Officers were on a motor vehicle stop around 3 p.m. in front of 100 Main Street, near the intersection of Main Street and Valentine Street, when the officers heard a loud crashing sound and saw a FedEx delivery truck had crashed into a utility pole at the intersection, according to a Facebook post from the Hackettstown Police Department.
An investigation revealed that the driver, David B. Fiallos, 46, of Long Valley, NJ, was traveling Route 46 westbound when he reportedly dropped his cellphone which he was using to find an address, police said.
While trying to reach down and pick it back up, the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into the pole, according to Hackettstown police.
No injuries were reported.
Officers found a Yeti cup containing suspected pink lemonade mixed with vodka located inside the FedEx truck, according to police.
Fiallos was arrested and later provided breath samples. Police say Fiallos was found to have a .12% BAC, which is 1.5 times the legal limit of .08% in New Jersey.
The crash caused more than 800 Jersey Central Power & Light customers to lose power, according to the Facebook post. Route 46 was closed between High Street and West Stiger Street for several hours as Jersey Central Power & Light replaced the utility pole.
Fiallos was charged with driving while intoxicated, using a handheld device while driving, reckless driving, failure to observe traffic lanes, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, and failure to wear seatbelt. Fiallos was released pending a court appearance.
