A 29-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh’s Agra was shot dead in front of his wife in an alleged road rage incident in the United States’ Indiana, his family said. The family alleged lapses in the police investigation and sought strict punishment for the accused and justice for Gavin.
The incident happened on July 16, when Gavin Dasaur, who had recently married in the US, was on his way home on a two-wheeler with his wife, who is of Mexican descent. A dispute erupted between Gavin and a truck driver over overtaking, following which the truck driver opened fire at him, according to Gavin’s family.
He died on the spot.
Gavin ran a transport business in the US. He married Cynthia, a woman of Mexican descent, on June 29. On the evening of July 16, Gavin, his wife, and his sister Deepshi went to a mall. While returning home on a bike, a pickup truck cut them off, causing their bike to veer off the road.
Gavin chased the truck and stopped it, but the driver, laughing at Gavin, escalated the situation, according to his father, Pawan Dasaur, who runs a finance company in Agra’s Cantt area.
The pickup driver suddenly shot at Gavin, hitting him with three bullets.
Gavin’s mother, Dimple, was also in the US for the wedding, and his sister, Deepshi, works as a software engineer there. His final rites were conducted in the US.
Gavin had been living in the US since 2016. After completing a diploma in mechanical engineering in 2018, he started his own transport business.
The father alleges that his son’s murder was a result of road rage and despite the assailant being present, the police did not arrest him.
Gavin’s wife, in her statement, called for a thorough investigation and demanded the death penalty for the pickup truck driver.
Vishal Sharma, Vice Chairman of the Hindustani Biradari, a collective of Indian expats, highlighted that such incidents have happened to many Indians in the US, often with racial undertones. He urged the Indian government to engage with the US authorities to prevent racial violence against Indians in the country.
Expressing his grief, a teary Pawan Dasaur said the family was looking forward to Gavin returning to India on July 29, but now, his mother will return to Agra with his ashes.
