A man was shot and two men were charged following a shooting early Sunday morning in New London, an incident that police said did not occur during the city’s annual Sailfest.
A 32-year-old man showed up to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London Sunday morning with gunshot wounds that weren’t life threatening and was in stable condition as of Sunday afternoon, New London police said in a statement.
Officers had responded to reports of a shooting between Golden Street and Union Street about 3:33 a.m. and saw a silver Chevrolet Silverado try to drive off when officers arrived, police said.
The truck driver led police on a chase through the city and onto Boston Post Road toward Wildrose Avenue in Waterford, police said.
The truck broke down during the chase and came to a stop. Carlos Figueroa, 28, of New Britain, allegedly got out of the passenger street and ran from officers, police said.
Officers allegedly found Figueroa armed with a firearm and he is charged with criminal possession of a firearm, possession of an extended magazine and interfering with police. He was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail, police said.
The driver of the truck, identified as 28-year-old Christopher Soto-Marrero of Norwich, was taken into custody where the truck broke down, police said.
He is charged with reckless driving, engaging in a pursuit, driving without a license and interfering with police. He was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, police said.
The shooting did not take place during the city’s annual Sailfest, police said. The event offers a mix of entertainment, food and shopping in New London’s downtown and on the city pier.
Police were still investigating Sunday and said the shooting did “not appear to be a random act.”
