A truck driver was found with a handgun on Thursday in Union during a commercial vehicle inspection operation spearheaded by state and federal agencies.
Connecticut State Police said the driver, identified as 34-year-old Bryan Lambert of Halifax, Virginia, was arrested when he was pulled over at about 10:20 a.m. after passing signage that instructed him to stop at the weight and inspections station in Union.
He faces charges of carrying a handgun or pistol without a permit and weapon in a motor vehicle after authorities found a Smith & Wesson during a search of the commercial vehicle Lambert was driving, according to state police.
Lambert was released from custody without having to post bail and is expected to be arraigned Sept. 13 at Rockville Superior Court.
The days-long inspection operation was being conducted by the state police Traffic Services Unit Aggressive Driving Enforcement Team and Truck Squad as well as inspectors from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the state’s DMV-Commercial Vehicle Safety Division.
During the initiative, which included speed enforcement, 22 commercial vehicle inspections were conducted, resulting in the discovery of 67 driver or vehicle violations, state police said. As a result, 12 vehicles or drivers were “placed out-of-service” and more than $43,000 in commercial fines were issued, according to state police.
