As someone who’s worked in road transport for quite a while, and one who is concerned about the future of our trucking industry, it was a very uplifting experience to meet the two finalists for the Rural Transport Rising Star (RTRS) award at the Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association Conference over the weekend.
Sometimes it feels like we’re banging our heads against a brick wall, trying to improve the image of. road transport for the general public and develop ways to bring bright young people into the trucking industry, whether it is rural or in the big cities.
For my generation it is very important to make it possible to pass on the mantle and identify those people who are to take the industry forward for the next 30 to 40 years. There is large section of the trucking population who are heading towards taking a back seat and letting the young ones run the show.
During the nomination process for the RTRS, I was struck by the overall quality of all of the young people nominated for the right rural transport rising star. Later, at the conference, over in the West, at Busselton, I took the opportunity to interview the two finalists during the weekend. It gave me the realisation that if there’s enough people around like them, the trucking industry is in good hands.
This is a very pleasing thought and it can only be a positive for us all, and did make me realise that there are people out there who are going to take it forward and make a difference. On the other side of the coin the question has to be will there be enough of them to be effective?
What the whole process does demonstrate is that there are young people out there who can make a difference and who will improve the industry with their passion and innovative ideas to take the industry forward. As I said, it was a very uplifting experience.
