A truck driver was nearly robbed at gunpoint after being stopped by a criminal in a car with police lights.
The incident happened in Edgecombe County, North Carolina on Tuesday morning, June 27th.
According to WRAL News, truck driver Wiley Stanton was driving his truck at the intersection of Wood Duck Road and Davistown-Mercer Lane when a black Dodge Charger with tinted windows sped up and pulled in front of him with blue lights flashing on their dashboard.
“When you’re an honest citizen, an unmarked car with a blue light, you feel like it’s a law enforcement officer. Had no idea it would be somebody trying to get a quick buck,” Stanton said.
Staton said that he opened his door to speak with who he thought would be a police officer when “a gentleman jumped out from the passenger’s side, threw a gun across the hood and demanded money.”
Stanton says he then came face to face with a revolver and quickly ducked down into the cab of the truck. The would-be robber soon ran back to his car and drove away without stealing anything or injuring Stanton.
“I kind of feel like what I’d done was subconscious,” Staton said. “Just to kind of divert myself back in the truck. But what I did worked, because I’m standing here talking today.”
“Pulled over by fake law enforcement vehicle,” he continued. “Had no idea it would be somebody trying to get a quick buck. It’s kind of crazy. You hear about stuff like this happening but you never think it’s going to happen to you.”
The local sheriff says a similar incident was reported in the area back in 2019. Anyone who doesn’t feel safe getting pulled over in the area is advised to slow down and call the non-emergency line at (252) 641-7911.
