Ahead of World No Tobacco Day on May 31, the St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund (SCF) is highlighting a major, and often overlooked, public health issue in the trucking industry: tobacco addiction among professional drivers. In fact, recent studies show that more than 50 percent of long haul truck drivers are daily smokers vs. about 11 percent of U.S. adults.
SCF’s “Rigs Without Cigs” initiative is believed to be the trucking industry’s only tobacco cessation program designed specifically for over-the-road drivers. The free, year-long program offers personalized quit support tailored to life on the road — addressing a critical issue in the industry often driven by long hours, stress, isolation, irregular sleep schedules, and limited access to healthcare, according to the SCF.
Since launching in 2017, the program has helped hundreds of drivers reduce or quit tobacco use altogether, with SCF reporting a 40% quit success rate among participants.
