Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) is expanding its powertrain lineup for the upcoming 2027 model-year trucks, adding a new range of Cummins engines alongside its recently announced Detroit Gen 6 diesel platform.
The additional Cummins offerings — including the new B6.7 Octane gasoline engine, the X10, and a redesigned X15 — will be available across Freightliner and Western Star models as fleets prepare for stricter emissions standards scheduled to take effect in 2027.
“Cummins is a critical partner for DTNA, and integrating their engines ensures our portfolio covers the full spectrum of applications for our customers,” said Joanna Buttler, general manager of product strategy and market development for DTNA, in a release. “Their next generation of engines strengthens the range of powertrain solutions available across Freightliner and Western Star.”
One of the most notable additions is the Cummins B6.7 Octane, the company’s first commercial-grade gasoline engine designed specifically for medium-duty trucks. The engine will be available in the Freightliner M2 106 and delivers up to 300 hp and 660 lb.-ft. of torque.
Cummins says the engine offers diesel-like torque response while eliminating diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), active regeneration cycles, and other diesel aftertreatment components through the use of a three-way catalyst. The engine can run on standard 87-octane gasoline and is expected to deliver up to 10% better fuel efficiency than comparable gasoline engines.
“The B6.7 Octane provides fleets a commercial-grade gasoline solution built for tough duty cycles without increasing maintenance demands,” said Jim Nebergall, executive director of product and market strategy at Cummins.
DTNA also announced the new Cummins X10 engine, a clean-sheet design intended to replace the L9 and X12 platforms. The X10 will deliver up to 380 hp in medium-duty applications and up to 450 hp in heavy-duty trucks. The engine uses a 48-volt electrical system to rapidly heat emissions-control components during cold starts to meet upcoming EPA 2027 emissions requirements.
The redesigned Cummins X15 will continue as a heavy-duty option for highway and vocational trucks under the new standards.
Several existing Cummins engines will remain available in the lineup, including the B6.7 diesel, the L9N natural gas engine, and the X15N natural gas engine.
The Cummins additions complement DTNA’s Detroit Gen 6 diesel engines — the DD13, DD15, and DD16 — which were unveiled earlier this year. Those engines feature updated fuel systems, improved combustion efficiency, and new emissions technologies designed to meet the EPA’s 2027 ultra-low NOx standards.
The Detroit Gen 6 DD13 and DD15 engines will enter production in January 2027, with the DD16 scheduled to follow in January 2028.
