With the start of the new year, the Dec. 31 deadline in some states has passed, but one state announced an IRP grace period through March 15.
The commercial vehicle licensing services branch of the commerce and compliance division of the Oregon Department of Transportation said the IRP extension was enacted under state law.
All trucks and buses with 2025 expired stickers displayed on their Oregon DOT plates are covered by this IRP extension.
Enforcement of vehicle regulations in Oregon should be delayed until March 16.
The Oregon exemption applies to local country roads, state roads and interstate roads. Drivers operating under this grace period are not required to carry any documentation with them.
In spring 2025, an exemption was enacted during a transition of IRP services in Canada.
Officials said the waiver was to ensure carriers with a March 2025 renewal have sufficient time to receive their credentials.
The change in Canada aligned the IRP program with other vehicle registration offerings and was part of the country’s efforts to enhance the customer experience.
“OTA has asked for enhancements to IRP service offerings and processing transactions,” Geoff Wood, OTA’s Sr. VP, Policy, said in March 2025. “We welcome the support and investment being delivered by Minister Sarkaria and the MTO. The ability to plate trucks that service the inter-provincial and international supply chains in an efficient and seamless manner is critical for the industry.” LL
