One thing trucking has never lacked is variety. Different routes, different rigs, different backgrounds and different life stories. That mix of perspectives is exactly what keeps trucking policy grounded in the real world.
Now, OOIDA is looking for its next wave of driver leaders, and time is running out to step up.
The nomination window for alternates on the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association Board of Directors is open, but not for long. Nominations close Dec. 31.
“In the words of Uncle Sam, ‘We want YOU!’” OOIDA Executive Vice President Lewie Pugh said. “The Board depends on fresh perspectives. That’s what has made OOIDA strong for decades. We have truckers from every corner of the industry and from all walks of life, and that diversity matters.”
Pugh said the Association is looking for drivers who want to roll up their sleeves and work together to protect trucking as both a way of life and a career, whether behind the wheel as a company driver or running as an owner-operator.
OOIDA stands apart from other industry groups because it is governed by truck drivers. The policies, priorities and positions are shaped by people who live the job every day.
“It’s important for members to run for the Board so OOIDA stays led by active, experienced truckers who understand the realities of the road,” said Bryan Spoon, chairman of the OOIDA Nominations Committee. “Member leadership keeps the Association focused on protecting driver rights, pushing for fair regulations and strengthening the voice of professional truckers.”
What is the role of an alternate?
Alternate members of the OOIDA Board of Directors attend and actively participate in all Board meetings. When a director is unavailable to attend, an alternate is appointed to vote on issues in the director’s place.
Alternates, as well as directors, are routinely called on to represent the Association at various hearings, events and meetings.
Here’s how to get in the race
Nomination forms have been mailed to all current dues-paying members and are also available online. Nominations close Dec. 31, so the window is narrowing fast. If you are a member and not yet registered on the website, send an email to [email protected] to sign up.
Members may nominate themselves or another member. To run, a nominee must have at least five consecutive years of commercial truck driving experience and five consecutive years of active OOIDA membership immediately before nomination.
After the deadline, the Nomination Election Committee will verify qualifications and send questionnaires to eligible nominees. Those who advance will be placed on the election ballot.
