Greenberg Smoked Turkey, Inc. in Tyler, Texas, said turkeys bound for North Texans got stuck in a FedEx facility in Hutchins.
HUTCHINS, Texas — There’s Thanksgiving trouble for one of the biggest turkey suppliers in Texas.
Greenberg Smoked Turkey, Inc. said hundreds — maybe as many as a thousand or more — smoked turkeys are caught in a shipping snafu, which could leave customers hungry on Thanksgiving Day.
“This is not the norm, it’s very upsetting,” said Sam Greenberg, president of the Tyler, Texas-based company. “I don’t care what that number is, all I care is that if your turkey is impacted, that’s the most important turkey to us here.”
He said most of the birds were bound for families in North Texas, and the problems started at a FedEx facility in Hutchins, Texas. The company dropped off the smoked turkeys at the warehouse, he said, then noticed the birds seemed grounded this weekend.
“Usually, you get a scan, and you know that they’re moving. Well, there were no scans,” he explained.
Some of the packages appeared only to be delayed, while others didn’t seem like they’d make it in time for Thanksgiving feasts at all. The company tried to send backup birds via next-day air service — but those appeared stuck, too, he said.
A FedEx spokesperson said an operational delay means some turkey shipments won’t make it in time for the holiday.
“We sincerely regret the disruption this situation has caused,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “We understand how meaningful a Thanksgiving meal is for families, and we know these turkeys are an important part of that tradition.”
The company said it was working with the shipper to address the issue — and apologized for the frustration.
“While some things are out of our control, I know, given a chance, I can make things right,” said Greenberg, who hand-delivered six delayed turkeys earlier Wednesday.
“Try to give us a second chance if you find it in your way to do it, I won’t fail you a second time,” he said.
