The driver of an oversized load recently found out the hard way that they were not allowed in an Interstate 80 tunnel in Wyoming.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol posted on social media that on Sept. 13 officers at the Evanston Port of Entry noticed an oversize load that had bypassed the port and stayed on the freeway. Officers notified dispatch of the load passing the port and dispatchers were able to forward that information to troopers in the area.
Sometime later a Commercial Carrier Trooper sitting just west of the Green River tunnel was able to intercept the oversize load before it entered the tunnel, which had been the scene of a triple-fatal accident in March.

The trooper discovered the driver was operating without an oversize load permit. The driver was cited for skipping the Port of Entry, operating oversize without permit or permission and ignoring road closed signs. These citations totaled over $800 altogether.
The driver was then issued permits back to the detour off of exit 83 to continue to their destination.
The Highway Patrol’s post said this was one several oversize loads that were stopped by Troopers Saturday before entering the tunnel. They remind drivers no oversize loads will be allowed through the Green River Tunnel and, additionally through the city of Green River.
All commercial drivers hauling oversized loads must follow routes given on their oversize/overweight permits. All oversize/overweight loads must have permit or permission prior to entering Wyoming.
