After a late night on Saturday, Texas women’s basketball coach Vic Schaefer wasn’t interested in a Monday matinee.
Following a 105-61 win over William & Mary in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Texas coach Vic Schaefer learned about the logistics for UT’s next game against Illinois. Two days after its game against William & Mary tipped at 8:45 p.m., Texas will host the Illini at 1 p.m. on Monday.
That schedule rankled UT’s coach. Multiple times during his postgame press conference, Schaefer implored a room of reporters to “make it make sense.”
Of the 16 NCAA Tournament games that were played on Saturday, just LSU’s matchup with San Diego State started later than the William & Mary-Texas contest. Of the eight games that are scheduled for Monday, only one will start earlier than Illinois and UT’s showdown.
“I don’t understand,” Schaefer said. “When I say, make it make sense, I mean, what time is it? It’s 11:20 (p.m.) and my kids are going to be back in here tomorrow in the afternoon, and then we’ve got to get them back up. If we’re going to have a shootaround, we’ve got to be in here at seven in the morning for a one o’clock tip. Illinois, if they’re going to shoot, they’re going to go seven to eight and we’re going to go eight to nine.
“I don’t get it. I mean, we played the late game. … Then to turn around and make us go at one. Why? Yeah, it’s problematic just from a recovery standpoint. I think my kids are in pretty good shape and pretty tough, but I just don’t get it.”
Texas (32-3) is a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Illinois (22-9) is a No. 8 seed. Texas owns a 3-0 record in its all-time series with Illinois with the last game taking place in 2000.
