Rail News – BTS: Transborder freight moved by rail declined in November. For Railroad Career Professionals

Transborder freight moved by all modes of transportation between the United States and Canada and Mexico was valued at $131 billion in November 2024, which was unchanged compared to the value of freight moved in November 2023, the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) announced this week.

Freight moved by all modes between the United States and Canada was valued at $61.8 billion, down 5.2%, while freight moved between the United States and Mexico was valued at $69.1 billion, up 5.1% from November 2023.

Rail, the second-most used mode, moved $16.3 billion worth of goods in November 2024, a 5.8% decrease year over year.

Freight moved by rail between the United States and Canada in November was valued at $8.3 billion, while the value of goods moved between the United States and Mexico was valued at $8 billion.

Detroit, Port Huron, Michigan, and International Falls, Minnesota, are the top rail connection ports for U.S. freight flows with Canada, while Laredo, Eagle Pass and El Paso, Texas, are the top rail connection ports with Mexico, according to a BTS press release.
