CargoNet warns the logistics industry of the increased cargo theft activity in the U.S. amid the approaching July 4 holiday.
Over the past five years, thieves have been increasingly taking advantage of the extended business closures during this period. While the record-high theft rates during the July 4 holiday week were seen in 2023, CargoNet says thieves are on track to beat the record this year.
“Cargo thieves are well aware that extended holiday closures work to their advantage,” said Keith Lewis, vice-president of operations at CargoNet. “With theft activity already surpassing 2023’s record highs, we urge the industry to remain vigilant throughout the holiday weekend.”
According to CargoNet’s analysis of 174 theft incidents that took place between July 1 and July 7 over the past five years, July 1-2 are consistently the highest risk days for theft, largely due to loaded conveyances being left unattended in anticipation of the holiday.
While California, Texas, and Florida continue to be the most targeted states, specific hotspots include San Bernardino and Los Angeles Counties, Calif., Maricopa County, Ariz., Dallas County, Texas., and Shelby County, Tenn.
Thieves continue to eye non-alcoholic beverages, particularly energy drinks, as well as major appliances and computer electronics.
Since direct cargo and conveyance theft during the July 4 holiday are more prevalent than complex fraud schemes, CargoNet highlights the need for enhanced, vigilant security measures.
Noteworthy thefts from previous July 4th holidays include:
- $439,895 in medical supplies stolen from Davenport, Fla.
- $352,000 worth of computer electronics taken from San Francisco, Calif.
- $314,191 of computer electronics pilfered from Commerce, Calif.
- $180,000 in meat products swiped from Georgetown, Texas.
- $180,000 worth of ATVs stolen from Savannah, Ga.
