The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is now accepting nominations for its International Driver Excellence Award (IDEA), an annual award that recognizes an extraordinary professional commercial motor vehicle driver and their commitment to public safety.
The 2024 IDEA recipient and a guest will receive a complimentary economy flight to Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport and a one-room, two-night stay at Big Sky Resort to attend the CVSA Annual Conference and Exhibition in Big Sky, Montana. The IDEA winner will be recognized at the annual conference general session and awards ceremony on Sept. 9, where they will receive a $5,000 prize and a crystal trophy.
Nominees must have:
- At least 25 cumulative years of crash-free driving in a commercial motor vehicle with a clean driving record for the past three years
- No felony convictions
- No safety-related driving suspensions in the past three years
- No driver violations in the past three years, excluding form and manner violations
IDEA is open to the entire commercial motor vehicle industry. Nominees do not need to be a member of or affiliated with CVSA to apply.

Gentle Giant Moving founder honored
The American Trucking Associations’ Moving and Storage Conference Wednesday, March 6, recognized longtime industry member Larry O’Toole, founder of Gentle Giant Moving Company Inc., with the Moving & Storage Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
“Larry exemplifies leadership in the moving and storage industry through innovation, service and community involvement,” said MSI Chairman Jack Griffin, chairman and CEO of Atlas World Group. “Since 1980, Larry has elevated moving standards, demonstrating a deep commitment to the industry’s growth and the well-being of its employees and communities.
“Larry’s contributions have not only advanced industry operations through innovation and service excellence, but have also significantly improved the public image of the moving and storage sector through integrity and community service. His leadership over four decades makes Larry O’Toole a deserving recipient of the MSI Lifetime Achievement Award, celebrating his lasting impact on the industry and community.”
O’Toole has been a member of ATA and the Massachusetts Moving Association, working with his colleagues to advance the causes of safety, workforce development and industry growth. In 2005, he started the Gentle Giant Foundation, which brings industry resources to bear to address youth development and homelessness in his community.
In addition, MSC handed out several awards to member carriers as part of the group’s Annual Meeting this week:
- Interstate Van Lines Inc. (under 5 million miles), JK Moving Services (5-10 million miles) and Wheaton Van Lines (more than 10 million miles) were honored with Fleet Safety Awards
- Good Greek Moving & Storage was named Independent Mover of the Year
- Olympia Moving & Storage was recognized with the Agent of the Year Service Excellence Award
- MSS Inc. received the Summit Award for Supplier Member
