Two Maryland community colleges received substantial grants to cover the tuition of students enrolling in their commercial driver’s license programs.
Prince George’s County Community College in Largo, Maryland, received $173,640, and the Community College of Baltimore County in Baltimore received $197,410. The federal funds will help pay the tuition for veterans, refugees, and students from underserved communities. The money comes from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training grant program, which is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed in 2021.
“I often remind people that if you enjoyed the food you had for breakfast this morning, the clothes that you’re wearing right now, or the phone in your pocket, that you have a whole bunch of truck drivers to thank for getting it to you,” said Buttigieg. “That’s why we’re so proud of this program, which is awarding millions of dollars to community colleges around the country to provide no-cost training to veterans and their family members.
“We believe in veterans, and we believe in the importance of trucking, for the country, for our economic security, and for our future.”
The Commercial Driver’s License programs at Prince George’s Community College train and test students to obtain their Class A or Class B commercial driver’s licenses. Student driver-trainees become proficient in basic vehicle operation, safe operating procedures, advanced operating procedures, vehicle systems, hours of service, and other non-driving activities.
