The government of Yukon has extended the Periodic Motor Vehicle Inspections (PMVI) for commercial vehicles operating in the territory from six months to 12 months, effective Jan. 1.
Currently, commercial vehicles weighing more than 11,794 kilograms that operate solely within the territory were required to undergo an inspection every six months.
The extension followed consultation with other Canadian jurisdictions and feedback from industry stakeholders.
The changes align with National Safety Code requirements and practices in many other Canadian jurisdictions while supporting Yukon’s commercial transportation industry, according to a news release. Reducing the frequency of inspections for certain vehicles will lower costs, reduce downtime and improve operational efficiency for businesses.
Commercial vehicles that travel out of territory must comply with the inspection requirements applicable in the jurisdiction in which they are traveling, the release added.
Certified technicians at licensed PMVI facilities in Yukon perform an average of 2,800 inspections per year.
