Troy delivery truck driver cited for traffic and local violations
Glenville police are investigating the third Glenridge Road bridge strike in August by a truck.
Times UnionGLENVILLE — A delivery truck driver from Troy relying on Google maps to get to his destination is the latest motorists to smack into the Glenridge Road span at the railroad overpass, according to Glenville police.
Shortly before 2:30 p.m., the Freightliner box truck driven by a 34-year-old man struck the bridge causing heavy damage to the box part of the truck. The truck, which made it through the bridge, was traveling west. There were no reported injuries and the road remained open.
The driver was cited for driving on a suspended driver’s license, exceeding clearance and failing to obey clearance, a local law.
Police said he admitted he didn’t know the height of the bridge and was following Google Maps.
This latest mishap marks the third bridge strike this month even as the span that is being outfitted with an “electronic over-height vehicle detection system” that will trigger nearby beacons to warn drivers their vehicles are too big to fit under the 10-foot-11 bridge as they approach it. The bridge is located between busy Route 146 in Clifton Park and Route 50 in Glenville.
The lasers will measure the height of the truck, and truck drivers will get early warnings on flashing signs when the sensors are tripped, the state Department of Transportation said earlier this year. The agency’s 24-hour Transportation Management Center will also be notified and the center will monitor the location via traffic cameras that are to be installed as part of the project, which DOT said will be done later this year.
That’s in addition to other safety measures already in place including a truck turnaround area and new signs.
