A wrong-way driver crashed head-on into another car early Sunday morning, seriously injuring himself and the other driver, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The wrong-way driver was a 21-year-old man from Wesley Chapel, law enforcement said, who was driving south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 in Hillsborough County. Officials did not know where he started traveling in the wrong direction, but a news release from the highway patrol states that they suspect he was impaired.
His car, a Lexus sedan, collided with a Chevrolet pickup truck that was driving northbound just south of State Road 56 at 3:42 a.m. The impact caused the truck to rotate into the median and catch fire, officials said. The truck’s driver was a 37-year-old man from Wesley Chapel.
That crash pushed the wrong-way driver’s car into the center lane, where it collided with a third car “nearly head-on” before coming to a stop near exit 275 for Land O’ Lakes, according to highway patrol. The driver of that car, a 36-year-old woman from Zephyrhills, was not injured.
Highway patrol did not name any of the people involved or provide additional details Sunday morning, including where the two men were being treated for their injuries or if the wrong-way driver will face criminal charges.
