On Monday, deputies from the Frederick County Sherif’s Office (FSCO) charged Matthew Sidney Watley, 46, with first- and second-degree murder in the death of an un-named woman.
Around 1:31 a.m., deputies arrived at the Costco Distribution Center in Monrovia, Maryland, in response to a call regarding an under-the-influence truck driver who had smashed the window of his own tractor.
FSCO deputies say they found Watley sitting in the driver’s seat of his tractor with it running at the entrance to the Costco Depot.
According to authorities, deputies tried to converse with Watley but were unsuccessful as he became argumentative.
Deputies said it soon became clear that Watley was under the influence. Officials placed spike stop strips in the front and back of the tractor in the interest of the community’s safety.
Officers say Watley tried to drive away, struck the stop sticks and began a slow-speed pursuit.
FSCO deputies claim Watley came to a stop at the exit lane of the Costco but refused to get out of the vehicle.
Deputies said they then attempted to verbally communicate with Watley using de-escalation methods but were not successful.
Deputies state Watley carried on in a confrontational manner, prompting officers to deploy OC spray through Watley’s open window.
According to authorities, the OC spray did not prompt Watley to exit the tractor.
FSCO deputies broke the other tractor window, got in the tractor, deployed a stun gun on Watley and successfully detained him.
While in the cab, deputies observed an unknown deceased adult female victim on the floorboard of the vehicle.
Out of respect for the family and until deputies make full next of kin notifications, the FCSO will not release the name and identifying information of the victim.
FCSO detectives are currently conducting a thorough investigation, and at this point, the suspect is currently at Frederick Health Hospital undergoing medical evaluation.
