Days after a 39-year-old physically challenged woman was killed in a hit-and-run by a truck in Shahdara’s Geeta Colony, police scanned nearly 200 CCTVs and questioned a dozen truck drivers to solve the case. Eventually, it was faded yellow paint on the back of a dumper truck and a malfunctioning headlight seen in CCTV footage that led them to the accused.
On January 18-19, police received a PCR call regarding the accident near a crematorium. A police team rushed to the spot and shifted the woman to SDN Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
A case under IPC sections pertaining to rash driving and causing death due to negligence was lodged and a probe initiated. A police team led by SHO Geeta Colony, Inspector Satyawan, along with ASI Anoop, scanned through information of all trucks plying on the Geeta Colony flyover.
The accused driver, Firoz (36), a resident of Moradabad, was arrested and the dumper truck seized. “The victim was a beggar at a nearby temple and couldn’t walk properly… while she crossing the road, the truck hit her and fled the spot,” said DCP (Shahdara) Surendra Choudhary.
“The team scanned nearly 200 CCTVs over 10-12 km from Shastri Park, Usmanpur, Akshardham and Nirmal Vihar… we eventually thought that since the Geeta Colony-Gandhi Nagar expressway construction is being carried out by (a firm), we searched the parking lot where the company’s dumpers are parked,” an officer said. However, they could not locate the offending truck.
Finally, footage from a CCTV showed a truck passing by the area around the time of the accident — it had the letters ‘RN’ (originally HORN) painted in yellow on the back. The vehicle also had a dim headlight on the right side.
A police team was deployed on the flyover. “We began searching for the truck with partially visible letters on the back and a dim right headlight and eventually saw it approaching the flyover,” the officer added.
