Truckers traversing Wisconsin are being asked for input on truck parking in the state and potential solutions to increase capacity.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation recently launched a study to assess the state’s truck parking needs. According to the department, the survey will help identify where industry stakeholders have the most difficulty finding parking in the state, areas where truck parking could be improved, and other considerations the department should weigh when planning future truck parking facilities.
WisDOT said the study is being conducted amid “growing national and state concerns over lack of legal parking at safety rest areas, leading to unsafe truck parking in those and other places.”
The survey is open to truckers, motor carriers, non-driver employees and truck stop operators. Stakeholders are asked to identify which rest areas, weigh stations, and highway corridors in the state require additional truck parking.
The survey also asks about the ease of finding parking across the state, specific locations where truckers are parking, and how long they park.
The survey is part of a larger study being conducted by the DOT, which is expected to be completed by summer 2026. In addition to the survey, the department said it would be utilizing onboard technology to identify locations where trucks are currently parking in the state.
As a resident of Plover, Wisc., OOIDA life member Richard Pingel is no stranger to the state’s parking situation. While Pingel said the situation in Wisconsin is not unique – acknowledging a nationwide lack of truck parking – he encourages drivers to provide the department with feedback on what could improve the situation through an important freight corridor.
“Wisconsin is really working hard on adding spaces, and the survey would go a long way to getting grants and the money needed for it,” Pingel said.
