BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ/Gray News) – Community members in Virginia rallied together to help a truck driver from Canada reunite with his lost dog.
Samuel Bissonnette often makes pitstops in Blacksburg and Christiansburg when he’s driving on a long haul, but he never travels alone. His two dogs are always along for the ride.
Bissonnette and his dogs pulled off to go for a hike during his most recent trip to Blacksburg on April 10.
“It was kind of a small, narrow trail, so I have to unleash my dog,” Bissonnette said. “Right when I unleashed him, Denver just ran off chasing a deer.”
The truck driver immediately did what he could to look for his dog, placing signs all over the town of Blacksburg, and even creating a lost dog Facebook page for Denver.
“When I lost him, my life just stopped,” Bissonnette said. “I mean, I needed to do everything I could. I couldn’t stop doing anything to try to find him.”
He said someone called a couple of days later saying his dog had been hit by a car but was still running.
Unfortunately, Bissonnette had to get back on the road and take a shipment to Georgia.
“That was so hard,” he said. “I know I wasn’t abandoning him. But I was feeling like I was abandoning him.”
While he was away, community members rallied together to try to find Denver, calling Bissonnette with updates.
“People were so amazing. I couldn’t even count the number of people who tried to help me out there,” he said.
When Bissonnette came back to town, he returned to the trail and tried to cook food in hopes of getting Denver’s attention.
Hours went by and there was no sign, until he sat in his truck, opening the door and Denver hopped right in.
Bissonnette is happy to have this four-legged friend back and said he will never forget the outpouring of support he received from the community.
Now he wants to find a way to thank them.
“I want to do like, kind of a little pizza party, something that people would enjoy. I know it’s not going to be a lot for them. But for me, it’s really a lot,” he said. “I’ll never forget the people down there.”
