The American Transportation Research Institute is turning to truckers for feedback on several key issues surrounding truck parking at public rest areas.
For its Public Truck Parking Driver Survey, the group said it is working with departments of transportation in all 50 states to “identify best practices for expanding truck parking at public rest areas and other state-owned locations.”
The brief, 12-question survey seeks input on the following approaches used by states to address parking:
- Parking information systems
- Repurposing state-owned facilities for parking
- Parking for adverse weather conditions
The group said the final report will include an assessment of how states are doing when it comes to providing parking – and will highlight best practices for expanding parking at public rest facilities.
Dan Murray, ATRI’s senior vice president, said feedback from truckers is crucial when it comes to finding solutions for the truck parking shortage.
“At the end of the day, it doesn’t make any sense to ask anyone but a truck driver what is needed to improve truck parking,” Murray told Land Line. “This particular ATRI survey is focused exclusively on truck parking at public rest areas. There are only 40,000 truck parking spaces at public rest areas in the U.S., based on driver feedback. States should probably double that number.”
According to ATRI’s 2024 report of Top Industry Issues, the lack of available parking was the No. 2 industry concern overall and the No. 1 issue for drivers. In fact, Murray noted that has been the case for half a decade.
“On ATRI’s annual Top Industry Issues report, “truck parking” has been the No. 1 issue for truck drivers in four of the last five reports,” he said. “We’re hoping that real-world data can address the problem and finally move truck parking down the list.”
