A truck driver for a Florida paving company is accused of using his company credit card to buy tens of thousands of dollars worth of lottery tickets, a sheriff’s office said.
The owner of All Phase Paving was checking the Chase bank statements for the company accounts in September when they noticed what he thought were fraudulent charges, according to an arrest affidavit from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
The owner said three people had been given credit cards that were connected to the company account, according to the affidavit, and each had individual card numbers.
When he checked the card number for one of the company’s truck drivers, a 47-year-old Clearwater man, he saw charges at multiple convenience stores, the sheriff’s office said.
The card was only intended for materials and gas, the owner told deputies, so he pulled up the truck driver’s vehicle tracking information.
The owner saw the truck driver stopped at the same convenience stores where the company card was used, according to the affidavit.
There was a total of $31,693.08 spent on the company card at these locations, the owner told deputies, and when the owner confronted the truck driver, the driver said he used the card to make “a couple thousand dollars” worth of purchases for lottery tickets.
One store manager told deputies the truck driver regularly came into the store and bought scratch-off tickets while driving the company truck, according to the affidavit.
The owner told deputies he was not reimbursed by his bank and is still “at a financial loss,” according to the affidavit.
The truck driver was charged with scheme to defraud for $20,000 to $50,000 and was taken into custody Feb. 5, according to arrest documents.
Clearwater is about 25 miles west of Tampa.
