A truck driver appeared to be watching a video while driving in Mississauga.
The driver was spotted at stop light at Dixie Road and Britannia Road near Pearson Airport in Mississauga, according to a post from 401_da_sarpanch on X (formerly Twitter) today (Oct. 24).
A video is clearly playing on the dashboard just above the steering wheel.
“Ontario truckers are wild. Hopefully, the police fine the driver and company,” one person said in a response to the post.
Watching a video while driving is a violation of Ontario’s distracted driving law.
“It’s against the law to use hand-held communication (e.g. your phone) and electronic entertainment devices (e.g. DVD player, e-reader) while driving,” the law states.
You can view GPS display screens as long as they are built into a vehicle’s dashboard or securely mounted on the dashboard.
But the law states drivers cannot view display screens unrelated to driving, such as watching a video.
A driver using a phone is four times more likely to crash than a driver focusing on the road, Ontario data finds.
The fine for a first conviction starts at $615 and can go up to $3,000 for a third conviction. Drivers can lose three to six demerit points and have their license suspended.
