Police have confirmed that a multi-vehicle crash that closed the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) on Monday night was fatal.
According to the Hope RCMP, the chain-reaction crash involving three transport trucks happened shortly before 6 pm, around 10 kilometres south of the Great Bear Snow Shed.
Sgt. Mike Sargent told NowMedia that a semi was rear-ended by the second commercial vehicle to begin the fatal collision.
“A third transport truck slammed into the rear of the other two transport trucks after being unable to stop,” he explained.
Unfortunately, the driver of the third transport truck was fatally injured in the crash.
“Our sincerest condolences go out to the family and friends of the man who tragically passed away as a result of this incident,” said Sargent.
The driver of that semi has now been identified through an online fundraiser as Jesse Sawchuk, who leaves behind his wife Lisa and three children.
“It’s incredibly difficult to put into words, and it doesn’t feel real, but we’re gathered here to extend our support and love to Lisa, Braiden, Tyson and Layla,” reads the GoFundMe created by family friend Kendra Stewart.
“They’ve lost Jesse and now face an unimaginable tragedy, losing both a beloved husband and father, leaving a void that words cannot fill.”
Funds raised will help the family with funeral and memorial expenses, along with other immediate financial needs for day-to-day expenses during this trying transitional time.
“Your generosity can make a significant impact on Lisa and the family’s ability to rebuild their lives and provide a stable environment for their children,” adds Stewart. “Let’s unite in compassion and demonstrate the strength of our community during their time of need.”
As of Wednesday morning, the GoFundMe had raised just over $5,000 for the mourning family.
