The driver of a tractor-trailer that was involved in a wreck on U.S. 52 southbound Thursday morning has been charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, Winston-Salem police said Monday.
Jerry Lee Dye, 63, of Sikeston, Missouri, was driving a 2012 Freightliner southbound on U.S. 52 at the Akron Drive interchange. Traffic had stopped and Dye hit the rear of a 1994 Chevrolet Blazer, causing a chain reaction wreck involving six vehicles — the Blazer, a 2005 Kenworth truck, a 2016 Chevrolet Sonic, a 2010 Mazda 3 and a 2022 Dodge Ram 1500 — police said.
Police said that Vladimir Rafael Logan Gomez, 24, of Winston-Salem, the driver of the Sonic; Henry Alton Gause, 63, of Westfield, the Blazer’s driver, and the Blazer’s passengers, Timothy Andrew Gause, 37, and Tempra Deondra Gause, 35, both of Mount Airy, were seriously injured and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
They were in stable condition Monday, Winston-Salem police said.
Four others, Eric Brandon Fulkner, 41, of Lexington, the driver of the Kenworth, Adam Clark Hooker, 21, of Walnut Cove; the Mazda’s driver, Michael Ray Bolen, 55, the Ram’s driver, and Bolen’s passenger, Juan Miguel Junior Marte, 23, of Stroudsburg, Pa., received minor injuries and were also treated at a local hospital, police said.
The wreck shut down U.S. 52 South for about 2½ hours.
