A Spring Hope man walked away uninjured after overturning his truck and snapping a power pole Thursday morning on N.C. 42 east of Wilson.
Thomas D. Winstead, 31, was driving eastbound in a 2020 Ford F-250 pickup truck when he lost control, according to N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Jordan Lamm.
The 9:34 a.m. wreck prompted emergency crews to close both lanes of the highway for about four hours.
“He stated he was wasn’t paying attention, ran off the road to the right, overcorrected, lost control and ran off the road to the right, struck a ditch, overturned and struck the utility pole,” Lamm said.
Winstead freed himself from the wreckage by breaking a window and crawling out of the truck, Lamm said.
The wreck happened on the 6200 block of N.C. 42 East where power lines cross the highway. After the utility pole snapped, sagging power lines hung over the road’s eastbound and westbound lanes.
Lamm said Wilson Energy crews indicated the crash caused about $15,000 in damage to the utility pole.
Winstead’s truck, which ended up on its side, was a total loss, Lamm said.
The Bakertown Volunteer Fire Department, the Toisnot Rural Fire Department and Wilson County EMS responded to the scene.
Winstead was cited for failure to maintain lane control and for driving without a seat belt.
